Scrabble Blocks - Wall Art DIY
This is something that my wife and I did for friends of ours
who just had their first child. It was a
gift along with this cool Wall Ruler.

What you will need:
Materials
1 - 1x6 8 feet long (you should be able to get between 18 to 20 letters out of one piece, depending on the quality of the wood) Paint Stencil's (three inch letters and one inch letters) Wood Sealer Hanger hooks |
Tools
Saw (any kind of saw will do) Sander (any will do) Paint brush (to apply wood sealer) Sponge Paint Brush (to apply letters) |
This is a very easy starter project. One thing to note. When purchasing your wood, take a minute to
search through the pile and find the straightest and cleanest (without chips) 1X6
you can find. It will be tough, but it will make the
letters sit flush on a wall.
No list of how to photos on this one. Cutting and sawing is very straight forward.
Your average 1X6 is actually 5 1/4 inch's wide. This is a perfect size for these blocks. Measure off your 1X6 into 5 1/4 inch pieces (so the sides are square) and cut as many pieces as you will need for the words you want to spell. It may seem obvious, but pick your words ahead of time so you know what the pattern of the blocks will be.
Once you have your blocks, sand each one starting with a heavy grit sand paper first (80 grit will do) then give a quick sand again with a 220 grit to smooth it out. Make sure you sand the edges and corners to give it that well used Scrabble block look that the pieces usually have.
Apply a wood sealer to each piece and let dry. Then you are ready to stencil.
One thing to keep in mind is the point value of each block. For example, an M is worth 3 points where an A is worth only one. To keep them authentic, search the point values in the game and how the letters are spaced on each block. But, because I'm helpful, I've included it here.

Once your letters are dry, attach your wall hanger to the
back and you have a neat gift idea or children's room decor idea that you did
yourself. As with any project, have patience and have fun.
